Wow! For anyone who has nothing to do this weekend you might want to check out the Oberlin College event calendar. Not only is the world famous Cleveland Orchestra coming on Friday but students from around the globe will be holding recitals in various musical genres.
So lets start with the Cleveland Orchestra. The performance will take place at Finney Chapel at 8:00 P.M. conducted by Andrew Davis and tickets are $35.00. Will make for a fabulous evening especially if you come and dine in one of Oberlin’s fine restaurants!
Now your next choice is really varied by what type of music you prefer and since April is the month of recitals you have many to choose from. For instrumental there will be several oboe performances as well as violin, piano, double bass, trumpet, and viola. If you prefer vocal music then we have soprano, baritone, tenor and mezzo soprano. You will need to check times, dates, and locations of each of these by visiting the College event calender for Friday and Saturday. And all of these recitals are free and open to the public.
Now if you prefer Jazz then you are in luck as the Jazz Forum will be held on Friday at 12:00 P.M. at the Cat in the Cream in Hale Annex. Jazz studies students will perform in ensembles after which there will be comments and questions from the audience. Again this is free and open to the public.
And for opera lovers there will be a HD LIVE broadcast of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Apollo Theatre in downtown Oberlin. Time is 12:55 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Saturday and admission is $20.00 each.
And there is also a performance for all of you dance lovers! The ViBE Dance Company will perform at 3:00 on Saturday at the Cat in the Cream. This is a show run, created, and choreographed entirely by students and again free and open to the public.
Now you may wonder why you would want to come and see college students perform? Well you never know when one of these young students will go on to become a world renowned musician or performer and you can say “I saw her/him performance for free!” There are many now famous people who were students here at Oberlin College. Get some autographs!
We would love for you stay at Hallauer House this weekend if you do visit Oberlin but unfortunately for you we are full. But keep us in mind for the next time you visit and call early!
