The Oberlin Summer Theater Festival begins it’s eleventh season so get ready to mark your calendar! This year there will again be three performances but one special event has been added. The three plays will take place in the newly renovated Hall Auditorium which is now the Irene and Alan Wurtzel Theater located at 67 North Main St., Oberlin. The new event, The Underground Cabaret, will take place at the The Birenbaum Jazz Club located at the Hotel at Oberlin’s lower level. Of course, as always, the play performances will be FREE but entry to the Cabaret is $10.00 for adults. Children 13 – 17 will be $5.00 and those under 12 are free.
The three performances will again be performed on a rotating basis beginning on June 21 and ending on July 28. As the season progresses you could actually come and see not one but two and maybe all three plays in a weekend visit! And make sure you keep a spot open to see the Cabaret!
Oberlin Summer Theater Festival
On June 21st the festival opens with Butterflies Are Free, first performed on Broadway in 1969. It is a love story between Don, a young blind man and Jill, a free spirited hippie, what we were called back in the day! But problems arise when Don’s mother begins controlling the relationship. This was also made into a major motion picture in 1972 starring Goldie Hawn and Eddie Albert.
The William Shakespeare play Measure for Measure will be added in to repertoire beginning
June 28. believed to have been first performed in 1604 it has a ring of the ‘me too’ movement of today. It seems that young Isabella, while pleading before a judge to save her brother from prison, was met with an improper proposal. My oh my I wonder what that could have been?
The final play, Long Days Journey Into Night, is considered to be one of the finest American plays of the 20th century. Written by Eugene O’Neill the play takes place all in one day in August 1912. It is a mirror into the soul of a family battling addiction, illness, immorality, and depression, at least that’s my take on it. Heavy topics to be sure.
And finally the Oberlin Summer Theater Festival introduces the Underground Cabaret! There will be three shows offered on different nights The first round opens on July 22 with songs about Love. Who doesn’t want to hear those! The second round opens June 26 with songs from Forgotten Broadway. And the third round, Unsung Sondheim, opens July 11. These performances will also be on a rotating basis.
